Tris (Shailene Woodley) and Four (Theo James) search for allies and answers in the ruins of Chicago as they run from Jeanine (Kate Winslet) and the rest of the power-hungry Erudites. Together, Tris and Four face one challenge after another, as they unravel the secrets of the past and the future of their world.
An enjoyable sci-fi romp but it loses some of its punch because the motivation of many of the supporting characters and the ultimate reveal just don’t make sense. I couldn’t step away from the part of my mind that kept asking the question, ‘Why?’ It happened so many times that by the end of the movie it was a cacophony of WHYs screaming through my head.
There are moments of brutality which pull their full impact in order to stay on the 12A ticket – good for my 10 year old daughter who was watching with me but a little disappointing for the adult me who needed distraction from those whirring WHYs. It still had a stirring effect on my adrenal glands though so all was not lost.
Before watching Divergent and now Insurgent, I was told by enough people whose opinion I trust that the book series is good. I will have to read the books now to find out if something has been lost in translation because there is enough going on with the world building and the characters to make me curious and draw me in. I need to know more, I need to understand more; I will have to go to the source.
If you can suspend your enquiring mind for 119 minutes then Insurgent is an enjoyable watch with impressive special effects, a good dose of romance and some genuinely tough-to-watch moments.
