It seems like the future of the Jedi has been unveiled, and it lies with a former Stormtrooper. The newest official video clip from The Force Awakens just proved something everyone has been very much convinced of from the start. The clip is barely fifteen seconds long, but in it, we get to see scared Rey (Daisy Ridley) on some foresty planet (which is perhaps not so interesting), a large assembly of stormtrooper army (which is somewhat interesting), and John Boyega’s character, Finn, drawing a blue lightsaber, possibly in response to Kylo Ren approaching with his famous cross-hilted sword (very interesting indeed).
It seemed likely since the first trailer that the scared-looking Stormtrooper might find himself with a Force connection, now we have a proof that John Boyega’s character is going to use a lightsaber. For those interested in minor details, it does not even look just like “a” lightsaber, but looks fairly reminiscent of Luke Skywalker’s first (resp. Anakin’s second) lightsaber. It would make sense that Finn is using an already existing tool instead of promptly making one for himself the moment he discovered his Force connection, since lightsabers can’t be just expected to drop from the sky (although, given the circumstances where we have last seen this particular lightsaber…).
Regarding the other scenes we see in the video, the large assembly of stormtroopers can be nothing else than The First Order in its full glory. As J. J. Abrams has recently revealed, The First Order is actually more than just a remnant of the old Empire – it is more like a revival, a “neo-Imperial movement”. The inspiration for The First Order apparently came out of discussions “what would have happened if the Nazis went to Argentina but then started working together again? What could be born of that? Could The First Order exist as a group that actually admired The Empire? Could the work of The Empire be seen as unfulfilled? And could Vader be a martyr? Could there be a need to see through what didn’t get done?”
And Daisy Ridley? The video does not show us what it is that Rey is looking at, but her expression speaks volumes. The planet she is on can’t be identified either, if it is a planet we know, then of course one can think for example about the forest moon of Endor. If that was the case, we could probably conclude that she isn’t looking at an Ewok.
But we have months to speculate. For the time being, May The Force Be With You.
