It should come as little surprise that the BBC have now officially announced that the 9th series of Doctor Who will consist of 12 episodes, plus a Christmas special. The same as last year and what seems to be the โ€˜new normalโ€™.

Back when the series first returned in 2005 it was 13 episodes, plus the Christmas special, and this tradition continued until 2011 when there was a split, with half of series 6 coming just after Easter, and the latter half later in autumn. Then, of course, series 7 was split once again, leaving plenty of room for the 50th anniversary special and the 2013 Christmas special.

BBC have also confirmed the writers of the first half of the series: Steven Moffat, Toby Whithouse, Jamie Mathieson and Catherine Tregenna. Mark Gatiss is also writing for the series and speculation suggests he might be penning a two-parter.

At the moment, filming is still on-going for the series with Game of Throne star, Maisie Williams taking to the TARDIS as we speak.

More news as it develops.
