Last night (Wednesday 13 December) Capital Sci-Fi Con ‘causeplayers’ beamed down to Cineworld, Fountain Park for the midnight showing of Star Wars: The Last Jedi to raise funds for Children’s Hospices Across Scotland (CHAS).

The group of costumers, kitted out in full Star Wars outfits, treated cinema goers to the special appearance. Fans of all ages were queuing for pictures with Chewbacca, Jedi Knights, Stormtroopers, Fighter Pilots and Princess Leia herself before catching the sold out first showing of 2017’s most anticipated film.

The ‘causeplayers’ are behind the Edinburgh not-for-profit sci-fi and pop culture convention, Capital Sci-Fi Con (3-4 February 2017), which donates all profits to CHAS. 2017’s convention attracted over 7,000 fans from across the UK and raised an incredible £75,150.68 for CHAS. Now in its third year, 2018 is set to be the biggest year yet, with guest appearances confirmed from the seventh Dr Who, Sylvester McCoy, and his companion, Sophie Aldred and Jeremy Bulloch, who played Boba Fett in the Star Wars films – more announcements still to be confirmed.

Keith Armour, Organiser of Capital Sci-Fi Con and community superhero, said:

“CHAS holds a very special place in my heart and the money raised by Capital Sci-Fi Con and the ‘causeplayers’ will go a long way towards supporting children with incurable illnesses and their families across Scotland.

“The buzz around the cinema was fantastic last night and we will be making more appearances throughout the week at Edinburgh Cineworld: Fountain Park, Vue Cinema: Livingston, Odeon: Dunfermline, before the Star Wars: Last Jedi showings.”

Laura Campbell, Community Fundraiser at CHAS said: “Keith and the rest of the Capital Sci-Fi Con ‘causeplayers’ are an extraordinary group of fundraisers and have  raised over £110,000 for CHAS through Capital Sci-Fi Con, held at the Edinburgh Corn Exchange on 3-4 February 2018.

“At CHAS, we want to make sure that wherever there’s a child in Scotland with a life-shortening condition, we’re on hand to support their entire family. The vital funds raised by the conventions helps us to keep the joy alive for families facing the most difficult time imaginable by ensuring that no matter how short their time together may be, it is filled with happiness.

“The appearance at Cineworld, Fountain Park was brilliant and gave the general public the chance to have their photos taken with their favourite Star Wars characters – creating a real buzz before the start of the film. We can’t thank Keith and his team enough for all their dedication and commitment to CHAS. Pick up your tickets today and roll on Capital Sci-Fi Con 2018!”

CHAS cares for families via its two hospices, Rachel House in Kinross and Robin House in Balloch and via its CHAS at Home service, which reaches families living across the whole of Scotland to deliver palliative and respite care. CHAS at Home and CHAS’ Diana Children’s Nurses work in local communities, hospitals and with health boards and organisations to reach every family that needs CHAS.
