The German Tolkien Society goes from strength to strength. We catch up with Tobias M. Eckrich the DTG chairman who discusses what has made the DTG a success.

The German Tolkien Society (Deutsche Tolkien Gesellschaft e.V. / DTG) was founded 1997/98 as a non-profit organisation based on the interest on life and work of Professor John Ronald Reuel Tolkien. It has ever since grown and today we count over 600 members, who organise, in their smials, regional Tolkien Days, readings, lectures and exhibitions.
DTG has created a platform for Tolkien-fans and academics alike. It holds an annual international Tolkien conference, the Tolkien Seminar, being the only annual academic Tolkien conference worldwide.
The Society also organises the nation-wide Tolkien Thing, the society´s annual meeting, has already hosted many prestigious guests such as artists Alan Lee, Ted Nasmith, Cor Blok and Jay Johnstone, Tolkien experts Tom Shippey and John Garth, the Italian band Lingalad, members of the Danish Tolkien Ensemble and many more. Each year the event hosts a partner Tolkien Society to share their stories and experiences.
DTG is also represented at international events like Oxonmoot in Oxford and conventions like RingCon and HobbitCon in Bonn, RolePlay Convention in Köln and many others.
There are several publications of DTG throughout the year, such as members’ journal Der Flammifer von Westernis as well as the academic yearbook Hither Shore, which has received the German Fantasy Award twice in the secondary literature category.

Seitdem wächst der Verein beständig und zählt heute über 600 Mitglieder, die in ihren Tolkien Stammtischen regionale Tolkien Tage, Lesungen, Vorträge und Ausstellungen organisieren.
Die DTG hat eine Plattform für Tolkienfans und Wissenschaftler gleichermaßen geschaffen. Sie hält jährlich eine internationale Konferenz ab, das Tolkien Seminar, die einzige jährlich stattfindende wissenschaftliche Tolkien-Konferenz weltweit.
Der Verein veranstaltet auch das bundesweite Tolkien Thing, die jährliche Hauptversammlung der DTG, zu der wir schon viele renommierte Gäste begrüßen durften, wie die Künstler Alan Lee, Ted Nasmith, Cor Blok und Jay Johnstone, Tolkien-Experten Tom Shippey und John Garth, die italienische Band Lingalad und viele weitere. Jedes Jahr besucht uns zudem eine Schwestergesellschaft, die ihre Erfahrungen und Geschichten erzählen.

DTG Overview: Annika Röttinger is the Commissioner for international Guests at DTG, so if you´re joining Tolkien Thing as Guest of Honour or Partner Society, she´s the one helping you out. Annika studies History in northern Germany and has written her Bachelor Thesis about the similarities between Anglo-Saxons and Rohirrim. She holds lectures at academic conferences and fan based conventions on her research topic.
