Over decade ago, music student Aaron Dunn read J.R.R. Tolkien’s epic The Silmarillion and wondered: could there be a film in the future? That was in 2004.
Fast forward to 2014, alas there is no film. However, Mr. Dunn, now as a composer, has tackled the enormous task of writing a musical score for the book. The first of a number of planned releases of what is affectionately called “The Silmarillion Symphony” was released last November, titled “The Deeps of Time.” These pieces are what Mr. Dunn calls “musical illustrations.” He writes the music “with the book in one hand, a keyboard in the other” in order to capture the spirit and imagination of the book in the most integral way possible. (He also kept a map of Beleriand on his wall for additional inspiration.)
A second release is in its composition phase, and is inspired by the tale “Of Beren and Luthien.”
