As if the release of “Obi-Wan Kenobi” was not enough, last weekend was certainly rich in Star Wars news. New shows have been announced and half a dozen trailers dropped. It seems Star Wars Celebration Anaheim has now become “the” place to announce SW news instead of May 4th.
Here are all the major bits in a summary.
The Mandalorian Season 3
Season 3 of The Mandalorian is expected to air in February 2023. A trailer was streamed at the convention (but sadly is not, and likely will not, be available to the public until another is released). The trailer showed the planet Mandalore, Bo-Katan Kryze sitting on a throne, and Din Djarin facing his former tribe, now being branded an outcast for removing his helmet. We can expect that the focus of the season will be the attempt to reunite the Mandalorians, the Darksaber, rebuilding Mandalore itself and all the issues that come with it.
Aside from this, Jon Favreau has confirmed this weekend that The Mandalorian’s Season 4 is already in development, so we won’t see the end of this saga anytime soon.
Young Qui-Gon, Dooku and Ahsoka
“Tales of the Jedi” will be a series of animation shorts showing pivotal moments in several Jedi characters’ life. In total of six episodes, three will focus on Ahsoka, showing her youth, her relationship with her mother (according to Dave Filoni: because mother-daughter relationships have been so far neglected in Star Wars), but also her fateful encounter with the Inquisitor that is familiar to some fans: this is the moment where she got her white lightsaber crystals.
Other three episodes will follow young Dooku and his Padawan Qui-Gon Jinn. Liam Neeson has been confirmed to voice Qui-Gon, and his son will voice Qui-Gon in his youth. “Tales of the Jedi” will stream already in autumn 2022.
Trailer for “Andor”
The story of a refugee from the Empire turning into a Rebel top operative will air already in summer 2022. Now, in addition to the info we have learned in the last weeks, we have a trailer. It seems to show, among other things, Cassian’s home planet stepped on by the Empire. We can also see several well-known actors in major roles. Watch the trailer below:
Sabine Wren and Hera Syndulla in “Ahsoka”
It has been known for a while that the series “Ahsoka” will also have the Rebel Mandalorian, Sabine Wren. Her live-action actress, Natasha Liu Bordizzo, made her first official appearance now. Aside from her, the trailer for “Ahsoka” that was streamed at the convention briefly showed another Star Wars Rebels character: Hera Syndulla. Unfortunately, just like the trailer for Mandalorian S3, the trailer for “Ahsoka” remains under Disney’s embargo and has not been shown, or permitted to be shown, outside the convention. “Ahsoka” is expected to air in 2023.
Bad Batch Season 2
The animated series featuring “clone family” on the run from the Empire is coming back in autumn 2022. The second season trailer has dropped and it seems like we’re back on track. The only surprise comes in the form of Gungi, the Wookiee youngling from The Clone Wars. Good to know that some younglings survived Anakin Skywalker’s rampage.
Skeleton Crew: A New Series With Jude Law
The mysterious TV series with “80s-style adventure plot” that was advertised to come after Ahsoka (in 2023) now has a name: “Skeleton Crew”. It will star Jude Law – to quote Palpatine: a surprise, to be sure, but a welcome one. Its executive producers are Jon Watts, Christopher Ford, Jon Favreau and Dave Filoni. Can this go wrong?
More Star Wars Visions
Last year’s successful anime-style project Star Wars Visions will have a second volume. Nothing more is known than its planned release in spring 2023, and that will be again a combined effort of multiple creative teams, this time from Japan, India, UK, Ireland, Spain, Chile, France, South Africa and California.
A Sequel To Jedi: Fallen Order
A sequel to the successful video game is scheduled for 2023. The game is titled “Jedi: Survivor” and the trailer for it is here:
