Yahoo! has exclusively revealed a ‘first look’ image at Michael Fassbender in the upcoming Assassin’s Creed film, and it looks suitably mysterious and just cool. While the film is going to follow the general idea of Assassin’s Creed world – reliving the adventures of one’s ancestors via unlocking DNA – it doesn’t intend to retell any of the existing game stories. Fassbender plays a character created specifically for the film, called Callum Lynch.

Not much is known, but according to Yahoo! “Lynch discovers he is a descendant of the secret Assassins society through unlocked genetic memories that allow him to relive the adventures of his ancestor, Aguilar, in 15th Century Spain. After gaining incredible knowledge and skills he’s poised to take on the oppressive Knights Templar in the present day.” It thus seems to be following canon from the much-beloved games so far.

20 Century Fox will begin filming on Monday, 31 August 2015, and apart from Fassbender the film will feature Marion Cotillard, Michael Kenneth Williams, and Ariane Labed. The film is slated to open in US cinemas on 21 December 2016.
