For the month of May, Hipsterfangirlfashion went to the big stage and interpreted some fan-favorite characters from Musicals of all genres.
We were not as lucky with the weather this time, but everybody stayed strong and we powered through the day and kept our spirits up until the very last character was wrapped up. Three lovely guest-hipsters accompanied us, as well as steady companions Sissy and Rouven behind the cameras and Dini, Jenny and Jeanne working behind the scenes for a perfect experience, that ended in a great pizza (and burger) fest at the end of the day.
We grouped our six characters into two categories: high-class sophisticated looks for Alfred, Evita, Elphaba and younger, more accessible looks for Elektra, Rizzo and Tracy. The result is a colourful mix of outfits for any occasion, that make you feel like the star of the big stage!
“If only this cellar was a bit brighter, I’d follow my duty with confidence. If only the crypt wasn’t so horrible and the smell so repugnant, I would be steadfast, but like this I admit: I’m afraid!“
Alfred – Dance of the Vampires
Alfred, the lovely main character of The Dance of the Vampires, starts our Weeks of Musicals. He is a little dorky and overall preppy, but we transformed his stage look into a fashionable everyday look, with just a touch of schoolgirl-charme. The combination of the feminine beige blouse and skirt, with brown tights and the signature red blazer, screams Alfred, while still remaining suitable for any everyday occasion. Next to the brown Oxford heels, the doctor’s purse is the most important accessory for this character. Red earrings and nail polish match the colour of the blazer and remind us of blood, a major theme in the play. As a reminder of the play’s theme is the fang ring, a little fun gimmick, to give the look the right round off. Hair and makeup is quite simple: the makeup consists solely of some highlighter, mascara and blood red lips to draw the focus and as our lovely guest-hipster Caro already had the perfect haircut, we only combed them nicely and fixed some strays with a little hairspray.
“Don’t cry for me, Argentina. The truth is I shall not leave you. Though it may get harder for you to see me, I’m Argentina, and always will be.“
Evita – Evita
Evita’s outfit is another nice look for dressed up occasions. Eva Péron is the wife of Argentina’s president in a time of trouble, so we decided on a business look to reflect her striving, involved personality. A classy combination of tight skirt and loose blouse are a very feminine way to rock the office. To make sure the blouse isn’t too revealing, we opted for a black tube top underneath, repeating the black and crème pattern of the skirt. A tailored blazer gives the look that ultimate business feeling, while the polished Oxford high heels make the look just sexy enough. Accessories are simple and rich: gold-rimmed round black earrings and one big statement “diamond” ring on perfectly nude manicured hands. The timeless combination of red lips and a winged eyeliner is the perfect makeup for this classy lady. The hair is pinned up in a side roll, with the front part laid in broad waves, reminiscent of the hairstyles of Eva Péron’s time.
“So if you care to find me. Look to the western sky! As someone told me lately: ‘Everyone deserves the chance to fly! And if I’m flying solo At least I’m flying free.To those who’d ground me. Take a message back from me. Tell them how I am defying gravity. I’m flying high Defying gravity. And soon I’ll match them in renown! And nobody in all of Oz. No Wizard that there is or was. Is ever gonna bring me down!’“
Elphaba Thropp – Wicked: The Untold Story of the Witches of Oz
Though there are many great characters to choose from in the stage production of Wicked, we opted for the beloved formerly-not-so-wicked-witch Elphaba. For her look we went with a fancy approach to an evening outfit. A long asymmetrical black dress, shimmering dark red in the light, combined with a vintage lace blouse, that are reminiscent of her stage dress’ miles and miles of fabric. Black wedge-heeled Oxford shoes are just as comfortable as they are classy, while the other accessories reflect the colours of Elphaba’s outfit next to black: red earrings and matching nail polish, a big green ring and a striking smokey eye in green hues, as well as a little black fascinator -which reminds of her witch hat – with shimmering green highlights rounding off the colour palette.
“I am electric – resistance is pointless. Feel my magnetism – you will agree. You can’t ignore me, you must adore me. I am electric, come closer to me.“
Elektra – AC/DC – Starlight Express
In the second half of our shooting, we portrayed young, alternative characters, like the overly confident antagonist of Starlight Express: Elektra! Instead of leotards and sparkle, we remodeled the look with a rock attitude. A tailored blue dress gets re-vamped with red boots, a skillfully knotted red belt and a red leather jacket. The look is rounded off with a delicate blue ring, blue and red leather bracelets, silver nail polish and earrings reminiscent of the infamous Rollerblade arena. The colour scheme is also picked up in the makeup: a geometrical eye shadow look with bold blue and red shades and glitter eyeliner are accompanied by bright red lips to create the ultimate stage-worthy makeup. Our guest-hipster Vanessa’s bright purple hair, screams for an extravagant hairdo, as does Elektra’s stagelook. We dutch-braided her hair and pulled out and back-combed the petals for a fauxhawk effect, that perfectly brings out all the shades of her hair.
“There are worse things I could do than go with a boy or two. Even though the neighborhood thinks I’m trashy and no good I suppose it could be true, but there are worse things I could do.”
Betty Rizzo – There are worse things I could do – Grease
For Betty Rizzo, the leader of the Pink Ladies and beloved Character of the musical Grease, we re-imagined her iconic black on black look: A black ¾ arms blouse and a high-waisted black jeans with shimmering stone applications are pulled together through a broad belt and highlighted with a light pink cardigan, representing the Pink Ladies’ Jacket. Accessories are fairly simple, as we opted for black flat ballerinas, a knotted bandana and some big sunglasses. A big handcuff hides her festival bands and nude-coloured fingernails look clean and classy, while our guest-hipster Karin’s tunnels were already the perfect ear accessory for the character. For the makeup, we went for an eyeliner-red-lipstick-combination, a classic and timeless look, that mostly anybody can wear.
“People who are different, their time is coming!”
Tracy Turnblad – Hairspray
Our last character is Tracy Turnblad from Hairspray – an overweight girl, with high ambitions to become a TV dancer and later maybe the first female president. We dressed her in an understated 60s look, with an olive circle skirt and a soft, fuzzy vintage cardigan. The look it’s rounded off with flat leather ballerinas, perfect for dancing through the night, and minimal jewelry in form of pearl earrings and a subtle necklace, the look is very wearable and versatile. The makeup is very natural, with only subdued rose-tones, browns and gold on eyes and lips, perfectly matching the discreet nail polish. Her hairdo is teased and sprayed just enough to be reminiscent of 60s hairstyles without seeming out-dated.
