The long-awaited series focussing on Obi-Wan Kenobi’s story is scheduled to launch on 25th May on the Disney channel.
Many fans would have expected the series to launch on the traditional date of May the 4th. However, 25th May is also an important anniversary: it is the date the original Star Wars film premiered in 1977. In that sense Obi-Wan is going to make his comeback exactly 45 years from the moment he first appeared on-screen, portrayed by the brilliant Alec Guinness. In the Kenobi series he is going to be portrayed by Ewan McGregor who is thus reprising his role from the prequel trilogy.
Remaining cast who have been revealed to reprise their old roles are Hayden Christensen as Anakin/Darth Vader, Joel Edgerton and Bonnie Piesse reprising their roles as uncle Owen and aunt Beru respectively. Other actors revealed so far are Moses Ingram (who recently made her appearance as Jolene in The Queen’s Gambit), Indira Varma (probably most famous for her role of Ellaria Sand in The Game of Thrones), Kumail Nanjiani (recently seen e.g. in Eternals), Rupert Friend, O’Shea Jackson Jr., Sung Kang, Benny Safdie, Simone Kessel, Maya Erskine, Marisé Álvarez, Paul O’Kelly and Stephen Cannon.
The series is written by Joby Harold and directed by Debora Chow (who for example also directed several episodes of The Mandalorian). Filming has finished already in autumn 2021. Large part of the series was filmed using The Volume – the same technology used in The Mandalorian: the video wall that projects high-resolution background for the scenes, allowing for a more realistic view.
The latest rumours, thus far unconfirmed by official sources, also say that the Star Wars saga composer John Williams may be returning to score at least one theme for Obi-Wan Kenobi.
