On 18th November 2016, the ‘Star Wars Identities’ interactive exhibition is arriving to London. It will be open to visitors in the O2 until 3rd September next year. If you would like to know what to expect inside, here is a review from the time the very same exhibition took place in Germany.
A new travelling exhibition opened on the 22nd of May 2015 at the Odysseum in Cologne: ‘Star Wars Identities – The Exhibition’. I was thrilled to take part in the press preview event & VIP opening.
The exhibition is filled with about 250 exhibits (unfortunately partially behind glass) from the Lucas Museum, some of which have never been shown elsewhere. The selection of exhibits includes pieces from the Classic and Prequel Trilogy to the Clone Wars, such as, most notably Darth Vader, Yoda, Han Solo, Chewie, Lando Calrissian, various droids like R2-D2 and C3-PO, Darth Maul, some Jedi, the Emperor, Boba Fett, Sebulba, Anakin Skywalker, the famous infamous “bikini from hell” of the enslaved Leia Jabba, a tiny selection of Amidala’s and Padme’s Wardrobe, a full-sized (!) version of Anakin’s Podracer and an impressive armada of sketches, drawings and model ships…
… only Jabba is exclusively represented by the eyes, because only the eyes outlasted the time. Yes, even the rubber body of such a powerful Hutt can get latex cancer and perish.
But the exhibit is more than just a travelling exhibition of movie props, models, costumes, masks and concept sketches from the beloved space saga. Even the educational mission of the museum Odysseum is fulfilled. The visitors can expect an interactive, modern museum experience. The theme of identity is scientifically studied: what makes a human being or what makes one’s own identity?
Beside an audio guide, each visitor receives a smart wristband. At ten stations, the visitor accompanies the development of the personalities of Anakin and Luke Skywalker and simultaneously creates his own Star Wars character – and learns something about him or herself. During the tour, the visitor has to answer various questions and has to make several decisions. The chip of the wristband saves the answers and decisions. At the end you will be presented with your own unique Star Wars character!
The balancing act between exhibition and educational mission has succeeded. ‘Star Wars Identities – The Exhibition’ is a must for any Star Wars fan.

am 22. Mai öffnet erneut eine für jeden SciFi- und Fantasyfan spannende Wanderausstellung im Kölner Odysseum die Pforten: Die Star Wars Identities – The exhibition.
Zu bestaunen sind (leider teilweise hinter Glas) ca. 250 Exponate, von denen einige noch nie anderweitig gezeigt wurden. Die Auswahl der Exponate geht querbeet durch die Klassische und Prequel-Triologie bis hin zu Clone Wars. Mit von der Partie sind natürlich allen voran Darth Vader, Yoda, Han Solo, Chewie, Lando Calrissian, diverse Droiden wie R2-D2 und C3-PO, Darth Maul, einige Jedi, der Imperator höchstpersönlich, Boba Fett, Sebulba, Anakin Skywalker, der berühmt berüchtige „bikini from hell“ der von Jabba versklavten Leia, eine klitze-kleine Auswahl von Amidalas / Padmes Garderobe, a full-sized (!) version of Anakin’s Pod Racer in Originalgröße und eine beeindruckende Armada an Skizzen, Figuren und Modellschiffen…
… nur Jabba ist ausschließlich mit den Augen vertreten, denn die haben als einzige die Zeit überdauert. Ja, auch der Kautschukkörper eines so mächtigen Hutts kann Latexkrebs bekommen und daran zu Grunde gehen.
Und auch der Bildungsauftrag des Wissenschafts-Abenteuermuseums kommt mit dieser Ausstellung nicht zu kurz, denn die Star Wars Identities ist mehr als eine bloße Wanderausstellung mit Filmrequisiten, Modellen, Kostümen, Masken und Konzeptskizzen aus der so geliebten Weltraumsaga. Den Besucher erwartet eine interaktive, moderne Museumserfahrung. Wissenschaftlich aufbereitet wird die Frage gestellt, was einen Menschen bzw. was die eigene Identität ausmacht?
Jeder Besucher bekommt neben einem Audioguide ein Armband mit einem Chip. An zehn Stationen begleitet man die Entwicklung der Persönlichkeiten von Anakin und Luke Skywalker und erschafft parallel seinen eigenen Star Wars-Charakter – und lernt so auch etwas über sich selbst. Der Chip des Armbandes speichert die Antworten auf die Fragen bzw. die Entscheidungen, mit denen man im Verlauf des Museumsbesuchs konfrontiert wird. Nach der letzten Station begegnet man dann seinem eigenen Avatar, seiner Star Wars Identity.
Fazit: Die Verknüpfung zwischen Ausstellung und Bildungsauftrag ist gelungen. Die Star Wars Identities – The Exhibition ist ein Pflichttermin für jeden Star Wars-Fan!
