We are on a journey to discover the sci-fi and fantasy movies that won the Oscar Award, from 1929 until today in the five main categories (Best Picture, director, actor, actress and screenplay).

The Story so far:
1933 – Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde
1942 – Here Comes Mister Jordan
1957 – The Red Balloon
1965 – Mary Poppins
1969 – Charly
1974 – The Exorcist
1991 – Misery & Ghost

The 76th Academy Awards ceremony took place on Sunday, February 29, 2004 at the Kodak Theatre at Hollywood & Highland, awarding movies released in 2003.

Directing: The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King – Peter Jackson
Best Picture: The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King – Barrie M. Osborne, Peter Jackson and Fran Walsh, Producers
Writing (Adapted Screenplay): The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King – Fran Walsh, Philippa Boyens, & Peter Jackson

11 Oscars, plus 4 Oscars for The Fellowship of the Ring plus 2 Oscars for The Two Towers. A total of 17 Academy Awards for a mammoth project, spanning over a decade and that has been re-valued even more in the aftermath of the tragedy that was The Hobbit.

The movie covers the conclusion of Tolkien’s saga The Lord of the Rings, bringing all stories to a close, with many a-tears, more excellent score from Howard Shore, a great song from Annie Lennox and many endings.

The special edition box set of all three movies contain extra footage and hours and hours of ‘making of’. Not for the faint of heart, but definitely worth the viewing.

Oscar Run: Sci-fi 2 – Fantasy 7
